Felix Robinson is an American Musician, Composer and Technology Integration professional. He currently resides in New York City and Los Angeles CA.
Born in St. Louis Missouri (as Frederick Robinson Jr.) he was provided with the nickname "Felix" at age 17 when just out of high school during his tenure as bassist and vocalist with the Bob Kuban Band, one of the region’s most popular groups with #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Felix was then offered a position with Phil Driscoll's group of highly regarded musicians, including future and former members of Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Bob Seger , Rufus and The Gap Band.
Playing electric bass, piano, guitar, and occasional second trumpet as well as support vocals. With this group, Felix recorded albums at Knox Phillips’s (Sam Phillip's son) legendary recording studio in Memphis, engineered by Charles Chalmers , followed by a second album with Phil at A&M Studios in Hollywood CA. with another hit producing legend,
Jeff Barry.
From there, it was back to the St’ Louis area where Felix performed from 73 to 76 with regional groups - Griffin, Maiden Voyage, Sky High, in anticipation of returning to the Los Angeles session scene. He soon relocated there in 1976 to record and perform with up-and coming songwriters. in early 1977 was asked to consider joining the heavy rock group - Angel, at that time one of the most talked about and publicized recording and concert touring acts, under contract to Casablanca Records and Filmworks.
Felix joined Angel as a full member and began immediately to compose and record their 4th album, then embarked on a nationwide tour in support of that record- White Hot (*). Upon returning to LA, Angel was appearing in and recording music for the movie Foxes (*) with Jodi Foster and a cast of soon-to-be film stars. Soon, Angel was recording their 5 th record, Sinful (*). Then, after another nationwide concert tour, a double live album, Live Without a Net (*) Angel continued to perform coast to coast tour dates through 1978-80 (links, American Bandstand etc.)
In 1981 Casablanca was sold to Polygram, their original manager resigned, after which Polygram did not provide a suitable continuation to their recording contract. Angel then accepted a temporary management agreement with David Krebs (Lieber and Krebs *) who included Angel into a multi-act concert tour called The Rock and Roll Marathon. (*). At the conclusion of those tour dates, they returned to Los Angeles and began rehearsing and showcasing for other record companies. “those were difficult times “, Felix recalls, “ for years we had been sheltered within the protection of a generous budget and attentive publicity machine that disappeared when we were released by Polygram, now parent to Casablanca ‘.
He continues, “I could see that we were just spinning our wheels and drifting apart”.
Felix, then began rehearsing and performing with several L.A. based groups, then began a nationwide tour with Boardwalk Recording artists -707, after which, he relocated to New York. It was around that time that Felix began receiving calls from some NYC based musicians asking him to start a band. After initially resisting, Felix finally agreed to participate at a rehearsal, and everything started falling into place. Things went well so they formed a partnership, chose a name – White Lion -and went on to compose new songs that attracted interest from both professional management and major record companies.
Recorded at Hotline Studios in Frankfurt Germany with Felix co-writing 5 songs, playing bass, keyboards, all backing vocal tracks and responsible for arranging most of the songs. The album, Fight To Survive (*) though finished and delivered, was delayed by their record company for release until 1985. This delay, along with other reasons caused Felix to consider his responsibilities to his new family, along with fatigue from years of living the hard rock and roll lifestyle so he decided to leave the group instead of leaving his new family for months away from home and gave his formal notice. Now, he was to start to use his years of working as a musician, engineer, and professional recording studio construction experiences towards creating a second career.
Felix continues to perform on Bass, Guitar and vocals for live performance and recording sessions.
